Serious Illness Counselling
In the mid 1980’s I began my graduate studies in Counselling Psychology by working with people who had contracted HIV/AIDS. I also worked with their partners, families, friends and loved ones.
At that time, it was a challenge to work with these people because life expectancy was measured in months and because so little was known about the illness. Nonetheless, I felt my life enriched and touched by working with these clients who taught me so much.
The experience was a privilege and, I believe, prepared me to work with others facing serious health problems and potential loss of life. Perhaps no other experience has opened my heart as much as this one.
